KLEINE SCHULE – GROSSE SCHULE – LERNSTRASSE (DE)

Mit der räumlichen Trennung der einzelnen Nutzungseinheiten und der gleichzeitigen klaren Verbindung untereinander wird die Einbindung kleiner Einheiten in ein grosses Ganzes gewährleistet. Die Erschliessungsbereiche sind nicht einfach nur Gänge sondern bieten Raum, welcher im Sinne Hermann Hertzbergers Lernstrasse den sozialen Austausch der Schulgemeinschaft fördert. Dies setzt sich in der Einbindung und Erschliessung der öffentlicheren Bereiche in den Zugangsgeschossen wie auch in den Aussenräumen fort. Es entstehen Nischen mit unterschiedlichen Funktionen und über alle Räumlichkeiten hinweg fein differenzierte Abstufungen im Öffentlichkeitsgrad. Die Schule als Abbild der Stadt, mit ihrer räumlich-sozialen Komplexität und ihrem Zusammenwirken von sich stetig verändernden kleineren Einheiten zu einem grossen Ganzen findet ihren notwendigen Raum.

SMALL SCHOOL / BIG SCHOOL and the LEARNING STREET (EN)

In this school we pursued the idea that Herman Hertzberger describes as ‘Learning Street’: The space of movement, more than a corridor becomes a communal space and an occasion for learning informal processes to develop. The movement that connects the smaller programmatic units of the school into a whole entity, also acts as the public space where the sense of community is created.  The space of movement changes character as the programmatic parts change from the most public (entrance, sports hall, auditorium, library) on the ground floor to the most private (classrooms, teachers’ offices) on the last floor and the parts in-between the two (evening school, restaurant, resting spaces, workshops). The aim is to provide various grades of social interaction in the form of various scales of public spaces, from bigger spaces where the whole school community can meet in formal events to small niches where small groups of students can meet informally. Design in this way aims at creating a school in the image of the city, with its spatial and social complexity and the variations in spatial scales and occasions.
